[recs] into the badlands

My ✧・+**✧・*glowing*・+✧*:・✧ seal of approval on a recent favorite ( ´ ▽ ` )

Into the Badlands airs on AMC Sunday nights at 10/9c! I binged watched the first season just as the second season started coming out, so I am very glad to have skipped that long hiatus.

I heard about Badlands as a rebuttal to complaints about Iron Fist's terrible fighting scenes. Since I almost couldn't believe that there was an (East) Asian male lead, I had to check it out. Additionally, kickass women, so of course. I have to say that the plot is a bit slow, but the choreography of the fights and overall setting is thrilling.

ITB takes place in a post-apocalyptic world that has reverted back to feudalism. There are "Barons", "Clippers", "Cogs", "Dolls", and "Nomads". Barons are the ruling class, and control land as well as materials such as opium and oil. Clippers are a military force loyal only to their Baron, and the head Clipper is called the Regent. Cogs are slaves, while Dolls are prostitutes. Nomads on the other hand, consist mostly of bandits who live outside of Baron jurisdiction. Guns are banned, but there is a decent amount of technology still available. The Badlands is somewhere within the United States, and is where the story takes place.

Daniel Wu plays Sunny, a battle-hardened Regent who hides his emotions. Lowkey shocked he's 42 right now, but he is very loyal to his Baron, as one of the best fighters in the Badlands. He is in a secret relationship with a Cog doctor, Veil (Madeleine Mantock).

Quinn is Sunny's Baron. He is pretty crazy, to say to least. Marton Csokas has amazing acting, and his drawling accent fits Quinn so well. He is married to Lydia (Orla Brady), and they have a son named Ryder (Oliver Stark), but the family does not always get along. Quinn plans on taking a second wife, Jade (Sarah Bolger), heightening tensions within the household.

M.K. (Aramis Knight), is a mysterious boy with mysterious powers. I think his character is rather bland actually, and one of my least favorites, but his storyline seems to be improving a bit. He becomes a mentee of Sunny, also known as a "Colt".

The 'Widow' is a revolutionary figure on par with the other Barons (as she killed her husband, who was a Baron). Emily Beecham is super engaging as an actress, as you can't help but wonder what her intentions really are. (Also, seems likely she was based off of Marvel's Black Widow but Beecham is 49324802x better than J*hansson and her character isn't butchered to pieces for some shoddy romance plot.)

Tilda is the Widow's right hand. She is highly trained but sometimes harbors doubts as to what her future will hold. Ally Ioannides eyebrows fascinate me, honestly.

I screencapped some of my favorite scenes below (mostly cinematographic shots because I don't want there to be any spoilers).

Please check Into the Badlands out! I love the old-school wuxia-esque feel to this show, and I really hope it becomes more popular. The first season is currently available on Netflix, so y'all should binge-watch it in a day like I did, haha. Thanks for reading :)
