japan crate
Hi everyone! I'm back with a review for the lovely Japan Crate, a monthly subscription box with handpicked authentic Japanese snacks :) Although I received this box free for reviewing purposes, my opinions in the following review will be honest and unbiased!
For those of you who don't know what a subscription box, basically it's a "grab bag"! If you subscribe monthly, you get a random box of items each month (aka you don't know what you're getting!) It's not for everyone, but it's a fun adventure, especially Japan Crate, to try out new snacks and flavors you didn't know existed ^^ Still confused? Check out their "How It Works" page!
As you can see, Japan Crate has three different options for people with different budgets! $30/month might be expensive for you personally, so you can taste a bit of Japan Crate's awesomeness in the Mini Crate :) I really have to say though, the Premium Crate really really really is worth your money ;___; I'm honestly going to purchase this in the future with my own money :D
Additionally, if this didn't make you want to buy it, each subscriber is entered to win a SUGOI CRATE! What is a Sugoi Crate, you ask me? Well, young tadpole, it comes in place of your regular Japan Crate, and contains over $500 of goods!!! You get giant snacks and DIY kits, Japanese-exclusive electronics and gadgets, as well as special collectible items! This month's crate featured an Xbox One (Master Chief Edition) among other great goodies!!!
---
Now onto the actual box! It arrived on a rainy Tuesday, in a huge plastic bag, after exactly 3 working days after they emailed me saying my crate was shipped out :) I was so excited omg!! I'd had a terrible start to the week, and immediately started diving into taking pictures of all the deliciousness ;___;
Exterior - you can see it is very well packaged and super secure! (btw sorry for the weird lighting >< these were taken at night so this was the best I could do with filters;;)
*internal screaming* AHHHH LOOK AT THE CONTENTS!!! Doesn't everything look gorgeous ;_____; They packaged it so well and I was surprised at the sheer amount they fit in that box!
---
Onto the snacks themselves~
Gyūtan Umaibo Stick (grilled cow tongue flavor)
This wasn't my favorite... The initial taste alright, but then the aftertaste was nasty and choked me up slightly. Texture wise, I would definitely eat a different flavor! My parents really like these though - they're a bit more adventurous than I am. 4/10
Chocolate Mini Pancakes
HANDS DOWN MY FAVORITE ITEM IN THE BOX!! I would eat fifty packages of this in one sitting if I had them LOL... soft, chewy texture, with a hint of sweetness from the chocolate filling ;____; So good omg I'm going to have to go buy these sometime;; 10/10!!!
Rum Raisin Soft Candy
ummm..... 2/10 not... not at all to my taste buds..... The other option you could receive was Strawberry T___T so sad I didn't get it;;
Tohato Caramel Corn
!!!I thought this was peanut butter at first because it smells like peanut butter, but it's 100% caramel corn. It tastes a lot like caramel corn, but it's puffy, and melts slightly on your tongue like a cheeto. I like it a lot better than actual popcorn though, because little bits don't get stuck in your teeth. 9/10
Chitto Soda DIY
This was super fun to make! One of my friends is super into DIY kits, so I made with her! It was so cool mixing the different powders and watching it solidify into mochi! Most DIY kits, unfortunately, don't taste that great;; However, this was still a great item - no mess, and clear directions were given in their little October 2015 Volume :) 8.5/10
Grape Gummy Ribbon
Strange consistency... the texture felt rubbery and slightly like the sole of a shoe..
IT TASTED GREAT THOUGH!!! I would recommend it to everyone..... I'm usually not even a fan of grape flavored candies, but this was so tasty! 10/10
Rich Cheese Scones
Super yummy and good! Tasted like Cheetos, but a less salty and artificial flavor way :) My friend she preferred Cheetos, but I actually preferred this "lighter" version! 8.5/10
Vitamin C Lemon Drops
To be honest.. these did taste like cough drops/medicine with a slightly bitter taste.. but I couldn't stop eating them! I didn't think I would enjoy them, but I ended up popping them into my mouth one by one until they were all gone LOL. As it is with cough drops, my throat felt really nice and smooth afterwards (I'm a little sick at the moment). 9/10
Poifull Soda Beans
These were slightly different from typical jelly beans, as the outer layer dissolved pretty quickly, and the inside is very chewy ^^ Cola and Lemon Squash (brown/yellow) tasted very good! My favorite was the Cola, but most of my friend preferred the Lemon. Unfortunately, Ramune and Cider (blue/white) were both a miss, having a stronger tang of medicine instead of candy :( Overall though, I still really enjoyed them! 7.5/10
Bireley's Orange
I found it super interesting that this drink actually started in California, and then Japan picked it up after it got discontinued. I was worried at first that the bottle might explode all over me so I held it over the sink, but it wasn't even a soda LOL. As someone who does not enjoy carbonated drinks very much because... the bubbles hurt my throat okay.... I loved this! Just sweet enough, orange tangy juice! 10/10
Mysterious Soda Balls
Eh, these weren't anything amazing but also weren't terrible. It felt like a chore trying to eat more of these though, unfortunately ><. 5/10
Sour Fruit Gummies
These didn't seem that sour at first, but after stuffing your face with approximately half the bag, your tongue begins to wither and die LOL. I loved these so much!! My favorites were the peach flavor, then the green apple ^__^. Grape and orange were also really good! Everyone I shared this with really enjoyed them hehe. 10/10
BONUS ITEM! Food Dog Gashapon
I got a Chihuahua on a Belgium waffle! I wanted the Jack Russell Terrier in a sandwich, because the photo on the info volume was too cute;; Still, I'm not complaining - it's still adorable!

For anyone who has read so far, KUDOS TO YOU!! I'm almost done!!
Out of this box of thirteen items, I wasn't too fond of only two snacks! I was a little worried before, because I've never tried a Japanese snack subscription box, but I can assure you Japan Crate really does choose great snacks :) If you don't trust me, look up all the other reviews people have made for Japan Crate! They're a great company n-n
I really have to thank Japan Crate for this collaboration, and I hope that many of you guys decide to try it out and find you love it just as much as I do!! If you want to check out what they had in past crates, click here! It just makes me more excited, honestly ;u;
